Greenfeast, also known as Lincoln, is a classic shelling Pea producing generous crops of plump, sweet green peas. A long-standing favourite in Australian vegetable gardens, it combines excellent flavour with reliable production and good resistance to wilt.
Plants have a compact bush habit, generally reaching around 75–100 cm tall, with pods approximately 5.5–6.5 cm long. Despite being considered a bush variety, plants benefit from some support to keep the vines upright and the developing pods clear of the ground.
The peas are sweet and tender when freshly picked and are excellent eaten straight from the garden or lightly cooked. Use them in soups, stews, risottos, pasta and vegetable dishes, or blanch and freeze surplus harvests for later use.
Greenfeast has been a popular variety in Australia since at least the 1920s and has earned its place as a dependable home-garden pea. The variety is closely associated with the old Lincoln pea, a classic shelling type valued internationally for its flavour and productivity.
Peas are among the world’s oldest cultivated food crops, originating in the Near East and grown since ancient times. Early peas were primarily harvested and dried for storage, with tender green peas becoming popular much later.
Seed count: approximately 3–5 seeds/g
Approximately 130 seeds per packet
When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Late summer to autumn
Mild climates: Late summer to autumn
Cold climates: Spring, with autumn sowing possible in suitable areas
Planting / Sowing
Sow approximately 20–30 mm deep directly where plants are to grow. Peas generally dislike root disturbance, so direct sowing is preferred.
Space seeds approximately 5–10 cm apart. Although Greenfeast has a relatively compact bush habit, provide stakes, pea netting or twiggy branches for support.
Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Peas tolerate a range of soil types but dislike waterlogged conditions. Maintain consistent moisture during flowering and pod development.
Harvest when pods are plump and well filled but before the peas become hard or starchy. Pick regularly to encourage continued production. For seed saving, leave selected pods on healthy plants until fully mature and dry.
Maturity: approximately 95–110 days.
Pea seeds cannot be sent to Tasmania due to quarantine restrictions.
