Pisum sativum

Mammoth Melting is a vigorous heirloom Snow Pea producing large, flat edible pods up to approximately 10 cm long. Sweet, crisp and tender when young, it is a heavy-cropping variety with robust climbing vines reaching around 2 m tall.

The entire young pod is eaten before the peas inside begin to swell. Pods have a deliciously sweet, fresh flavour and satisfying crunch, making them excellent eaten straight from the garden, sliced into salads or lightly steamed or stir-fried. Quick cooking preserves their sweetness and crisp texture.

Plants produce attractive white flowers followed by abundant pods over an extended period. Regular harvesting is important with snow peas, as picking the young pods encourages the vines to continue flowering and producing.

Mammoth Melting performs particularly well in cool weather and has useful resistance to wilt. Its tall climbing habit requires a strong trellis, netting or fence, but climbing peas reward the extra support with heavy yields over a longer period than many dwarf varieties.

Peas are among the world’s oldest cultivated food crops, originating in the Near East and grown since ancient times. Early peas were primarily harvested and dried for storage, while edible-podded forms such as snow peas were selected for their tender pods and eventually became important vegetables throughout Europe and Asia.

Seed count: approximately 3–5 seeds/g
Approximately 120 seeds per packet

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 20–30 mm deep directly where plants are to grow. Peas generally dislike root disturbance, so direct sowing is preferred.

Space seeds approximately 5–10 cm apart and provide a strong trellis, netting or other climbing support. Vines can reach approximately 2 m tall.

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Peas tolerate a range of soil types but dislike waterlogged conditions. Maintain consistent moisture during flowering and pod development.

Harvest pods while they are young, flat and tender, before the peas inside become noticeably swollen. Pick regularly to encourage continued flowering and production. For seed saving, leave selected pods on healthy plants until fully mature and dry.

Maturity: approximately 72–74 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, we cannot send Pea seeds to Tasmania and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
