Pisum sativum

Oregon Snow Pea is a reliable, heavy-bearing variety producing crisp, flat edible pods up to approximately 10 cm long. Compact plants grow to around 70 cm tall, making this an excellent choice where space is limited or a tall climbing pea is impractical.

The entire young pod is eaten before the peas inside fully develop. Pods are tender, sweet and crunchy, excellent eaten fresh in salads or straight from the garden. They are equally good lightly steamed or quickly stir-fried, where brief cooking retains their fresh flavour and crisp texture.

Plants have a compact bush habit and can be grown with or without support, although low pea netting, stakes or twiggy branches can help keep the crop upright and make harvesting easier. The variety is a vigorous producer with useful disease resistance and a relatively quick maturity.

Regular harvesting is particularly important with snow peas. Pick pods while they are still flat and tender to encourage the plants to continue flowering and producing over an extended period.

Peas are among the world’s oldest cultivated food crops, originating in the Near East and grown since ancient times. Early peas were primarily harvested and dried for storage, while edible-podded forms such as snow peas were selected for their tender pods and became important vegetables in many cuisines.

Seed count: approximately 3–5 seeds/g
Approximately 130 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Subtropics: Late summer to autumn
Mild climates: Late summer to autumn
Cold climates: Spring, with autumn sowing possible in suitable areas

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 20–30 mm deep directly where plants are to grow. Peas generally dislike root disturbance, so direct sowing is preferred.

Space seeds approximately 5–10 cm apart. Plants grow to around 70 cm tall and can be grown without staking, although low support can help keep plants upright and pods clear of the soil.

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Peas tolerate a range of soil types but dislike waterlogged conditions. Maintain consistent moisture during flowering and pod development.

Harvest pods while young, flat and tender, before the peas inside become noticeably swollen. Pick regularly to encourage continued production. For seed saving, leave selected pods on healthy plants until fully mature and dry.

Maturity: approximately 60–68 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, we cannot send Pea seeds to Tasmania and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
