Trifolium resupinatum

Persian Clover, also known as Shaftal, is a soft, fast-growing annual clover valued for its palatable, high-protein forage, vigorous growth and excellent regrowth after cutting or grazing. It performs particularly well in moist, fertile soils and is useful for pasture, hay production, green manure and cover cropping.

As a legume, Persian Clover forms a symbiotic relationship with beneficial soil bacteria, fixing atmospheric nitrogen through its root nodules and helping build soil fertility for following crops. Its dense growth also provides useful ground cover, helping protect the soil and contribute organic matter.

Well suited to repeated cutting or grazing when actively growing, Shaftal can provide multiple harvests under favourable conditions. It is particularly useful in areas with reliable moisture or where irrigation is available.

Approximately 7,000 seeds per packet

Subtropics: Autumn to winter
Mild climates: Autumn
Cold climates: Autumn to early spring

Planting / Sowing

Broadcast evenly over prepared, moist soil and lightly rake into the surface. Sow shallowly and keep consistently moist during germination and establishment.

For green manure, cut at or around flowering and leave the foliage on the surface as mulch or incorporate lightly into the soil. For forage, avoid grazing too heavily and allow plants sufficient time to regrow between grazing or cutting.

For maximum nitrogen fixation, treat seed with the appropriate Clover inoculant where compatible rhizobia are not already established in the soil.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
