Plantago lanceolata

Tonic Plantain is a hardy, broadleaf, short-lived perennial forage herb valued for its deep taproot, nutritious foliage and excellent summer production. Fast to establish and highly adaptable, it provides valuable forage for grazing animals and poultry and is particularly useful as part of mixed pasture systems with grasses and clovers.

Its deep root system allows established plants to access moisture and nutrients from lower in the soil profile, contributing to good drought tolerance and reliable growth during warmer, drier periods. The foliage is high in protein and minerals, including calcium, making Tonic a useful addition to diverse forage systems.

Young plantain leaves also have a long history as an edible spring green in Europe. Left to flower, plants can reach approximately 90 cm tall, producing characteristic slender flower spikes that are visited by butterflies and other insects.

Tonic is tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions and has good resistance to pests and diseases. It performs best in moderately fertile, well-drained soil and tolerates mildly acidic conditions from approximately pH 5.5–7.

Sowing rate: approximately 25 g per 50 m²
Optimal germination temperature: 10–21°C

Planting / Sowing

Broadcast seed evenly over a prepared seedbed and lightly rake or press into the soil surface. Plantain seed is small, so avoid burying too deeply. Keep moist during germination and establishment.

For pasture improvement, sow alongside suitable grasses and clovers to provide a diverse mixture of forage species with different rooting depths and nutritional characteristics. Once established, manage grazing to allow sufficient recovery and maintain productive growth.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety.
