Papaver orientale

Oriental Mixed is a spectacular hardy perennial Poppy producing large, papery flowers in a rich mixture of coral, tangerine, orange and crimson. The dramatic blooms are carried on tall stems above deeply divided foliage, creating a striking display through late spring and early summer.

Once established, Oriental Poppies are remarkably tough and long-lived, returning year after year in suitable climates. Their bold flowers make an impressive feature in cottage gardens, perennial borders and mass plantings, while the open blooms provide pollen for bees and other pollinating insects.

Plants prefer full sun and free-draining soil and develop good drought tolerance once established. Oriental Poppies perform particularly well in cooler and temperate climates and may become dormant after flowering, with foliage dying back before returning with cooler conditions.

Approximately 1,800 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Generally not suited to tropical climates
Subtropics: Autumn to winter in cooler areas
Mild climates: Autumn to spring
Cold climates: Spring or autumn

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow or into individual pots to minimise root disturbance. Scatter the fine seed over prepared soil and press gently onto the surface, covering only very lightly.

Keep moist during germination and thin seedlings carefully once established. Choose a permanent position in full sun with excellent drainage, as Oriental Poppies develop a substantial taproot and dislike being disturbed once established.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
