Papaver rhoeas

Shirley Single Flowered Mix is a classic annual Poppy producing delicate, tissue-like single blooms in a beautiful mixture of colours including pink, rose, salmon, red and white, often with softly blended or contrasting edges. Growing to approximately 70 cm tall, the slender stems create a light, graceful display through late winter and spring.

A long-time cottage garden favourite, Shirley Poppies are excellent for mass planting, wildflower gardens and informal borders. The flowers can also be used for cutting, while blooms left in the garden provide pollen for bees and other pollinating insects.

Plants perform best in a warm, sunny position with average, well-drained soil and a neutral pH. Pinching out early buds can encourage bushier, more strongly branched plants, while removing finished flowers helps prolong the flowering season. Allow some seed pods to mature if you would like plants to self-seed.

Seed count: approximately 7,000 seeds/g

Approximately 1800 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter in cooler locations
Subtropics: Autumn to winter
Mild climates: Late summer to autumn
Cold climates: Late summer to autumn, or early spring

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, as Poppies dislike root disturbance. Scatter the fine seed thinly over prepared soil, press gently onto the surface and cover only very lightly. Keep moist during germination.

Thin seedlings to approximately 15–20 cm apart. Grow in full sun and well-drained soil. Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage a longer flowering period.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
