Ratibida columnifera

Mexican Hat is a distinctive North American perennial wildflower producing unusual daisy-like blooms with long, drooping red and yellow petals surrounding a prominent, elongated central cone. The flower's characteristic sombrero-like shape gives this striking member of the Asteraceae family its common name.

Hardy and fast growing, Prairie Coneflower develops upright stems above finely divided grey-green foliage and flowers generously over a long period. The blooms attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects and make unusual, long-lasting cut flowers. Plants are also generally avoided by deer.

Exceptionally drought tolerant once established, Mexican Hat thrives in full sun and adapts to a wide range of soils, including relatively poor and dry conditions. It can self-seed readily and spread vigorously in favourable conditions, so remove spent seed heads if you wish to limit its spread.

The plant has a history of traditional use by Indigenous peoples of North America, including preparations made from the leaves and stems. It is best grown as an ornamental rather than used medicinally without appropriate knowledge of its preparation and use.

Seed count: approximately 885 seeds/g

Approximately 150 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter in cooler locations
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn and spring
Cold climates: Spring, or autumn for natural cold stratification

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow or raise in trays. Scatter seed over moist soil and cover only very lightly. A period of cool, moist conditions can improve germination.

Transplant or thin seedlings to approximately 30–45 cm apart in full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, plants require little supplementary water and tolerate hot, dry conditions well.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
