Rudbeckia hirta

Marmalade is a cheerful Rudbeckia producing masses of large, golden-yellow daisy-like flowers with prominent dark brown to almost black centres. Growing approximately 45–90 cm tall, the branching plants provide a brilliant display of warm colour throughout summer and into autumn.

An excellent choice for cottage gardens, borders, wildflower plantings and cutting gardens, Marmalade produces strong stems and long-lasting flowers that work beautifully in fresh arrangements. The blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, while mature seed heads can be left for seed-eating birds.

Hardy and easy to grow, Marmalade thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and tolerates periods of dry weather once established. Although Rudbeckia hirta is a short-lived perennial, it is commonly grown as an annual or biennial and may readily self-seed in favourable conditions.

Seed count: approximately 2,000 seeds/g
Approximately 300 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter in cooler locations
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn and spring
Cold climates: Spring after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly or raise in trays, pressing the seed gently onto the surface of moist soil or seed-raising mix. Cover only very lightly, as light can assist germination.

Transplant or thin seedlings to approximately 30–40 cm apart in full sun and well-drained soil. Regular deadheading encourages continued flowering, or leave selected seed heads to mature for birds and natural self-seeding.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
