Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla

Ruby Red Chard is a classic heirloom silverbeet grown since 1857, valued for its striking deep red stems, which become particularly vibrant during cooler weather. The glossy dark green leaves have a mild, pleasant flavour and are equally at home in the ornamental garden as they are in the kitchen. Young leaves are delicious fresh in salads, while mature leaves and colourful stems are excellent steamed, sautéed, added to soups, pasta dishes and stir-fries. This productive cut-and-come-again variety provides an extended harvest throughout the cooler seasons.

Approximately 50–70 seeds per gram
Approximately 100 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to August
Subtropics: March to September
Mild climates: February to November
Cold climates: Spring to autumn

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed 15–20 mm deep in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination. Thin seedlings to 25–30 cm apart to allow plants to develop fully. Harvest the outer leaves from approximately 60 days, leaving the growing centre intact to encourage continuous production.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
