Trifolium subterraneum

Sub Clover is a productive cool-season annual legume widely used for pasture, green manure, ground cover and soil improvement. It grows actively through winter and spring, naturally dying back as conditions become hot and dry before regenerating from seed with autumn rains.

Well suited to neutral soils, Sub Clover develops a strong root system and provides excellent ground coverage. As a legume, it forms a symbiotic relationship with beneficial soil bacteria, fixing atmospheric nitrogen through its root nodules and helping build fertility for following crops or companion pasture species.

Its ability to self-seed and regenerate makes it particularly useful as a longer-term living ground cover in orchards, pastures and other areas where seasonal winter and spring growth is desirable.

Approximately 580 seeds per packet
Sowing rate: approximately 6–10 kg/ha

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Generally better suited to cooler regions
Subtropics: Autumn to winter
Mild climates: Autumn to winter
Cold climates: Autumn, winter or spring

Planting / Sowing

Broadcast evenly over prepared soil and lightly rake or press seed into the surface. Keep moist during germination and establishment.

For green manure, cut at or around flowering and leave the foliage on the surface as mulch or lightly incorporate into the soil. If growing as a self-regenerating ground cover, allow plants to flower and set seed before summer dieback.

For maximum nitrogen fixation, treat seed with the appropriate Clover inoculant where compatible rhizobia are not already established in the soil.

Not available for TAS. Due to quarantine restrictions, WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
