Thymus pulegioides

Broad-leaved Thyme, sometimes sold as Pizza Thyme, is a highly aromatic perennial herb valued for its larger leaves, vigorous growth and rich savoury flavour. Forming a low-growing mat of fragrant foliage, it makes an excellent addition to herb gardens, rockeries, borders and container plantings while also attracting bees and other beneficial pollinators when in flower.

The leaves are intensely fragrant and are widely used in cooking, particularly with tomato-based dishes, pizzas, roasted vegetables, soups and Mediterranean cuisine. The robust flavour holds well during cooking, making it one of the most useful culinary herbs for the home gardener.

Like other thymes, Broad Leaved Thyme has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine and was highly regarded throughout ancient Greece and Rome. Its aromatic foliage contains naturally occurring essential oils that contribute to its distinctive fragrance and flavour.

Easy to grow and drought tolerant once established, this hardy perennial thrives in sunny positions and well-drained soil. Regular harvesting encourages compact growth and provides a continual supply of fresh leaves for the kitchen.

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of moist seed-raising mix and lightly press into place. Cover only very lightly, as light assists germination. Keep moist until seedlings emerge. Transplant into a sunny position with well-drained soil, spacing plants 25–30 cm apart. Avoid overwatering once established. Harvest regularly to encourage dense, bushy growth.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
