Backhousia citriodora

One of Australia's most celebrated bushfood and aromatic plants, Lemon Myrtle is prized for its intensely fragrant leaves and exceptional lemon flavour. Native to the subtropical rainforests of eastern Australia, this attractive evergreen shrub or small tree produces glossy green lance-shaped leaves that release a powerful citrus aroma when crushed. In its natural habitat it may reach 6–20 metres in height, though it can be readily pruned to maintain a smaller, more manageable size in gardens and containers.

Lemon Myrtle has become increasingly popular in both culinary and herbal applications. The leaves are widely used to flavour teas, desserts, baked goods, sauces, seafood and beverages, providing a clean, vibrant lemon flavour without the acidity of citrus fruit. The plant is also highly valued for its essential oil content, which is among the richest natural sources of citral. In summer, clusters of creamy white flowers appear, attracting bees and adding ornamental appeal to the garden.

Approximately 40 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: Spring to autumn
Subtropics: Spring and summer
Mild climates: Spring to early autumn
Cold climates: Spring after frost has passed

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed onto the surface of a fine, moist seed raising mix and lightly press into place. Do not bury deeply, as light assists germination. Keep consistently moist and maintain warm conditions throughout the germination period. Position in a bright location with filtered light. Transplant seedlings carefully once established and plant into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Protect young plants from heavy frost and drying winds while establishing.
