Passiflora edulis

Purple Giant Passionfruit is a vigorous perennial climbing vine producing large, aromatic purple fruit filled with juicy, tangy-sweet pulp. Its lush green foliage and spectacular passionflowers also make it an attractive addition to productive gardens, fences, pergolas and trellises.

The fragrant pulp is delicious eaten fresh or used in desserts, cakes, yoghurt, drinks, sauces and preserves. Passionfruit vines are fast growing in warm conditions and, with strong support, can provide abundant growth and fruit over several years.

Best suited to subtropical and warm temperate climates, passionfruit prefers a sunny, sheltered position protected from strong winds and heavy frost. Regular moisture and fertile soil will encourage vigorous growth and fruit production.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Year round
Subtropics: Spring to early autumn
Mild climates: Spring to summer
Cold climates: Spring to early summer in a warm, protected position

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 5–10 mm deep into a quality seed-raising mix and keep warm and consistently moist. Passionfruit seed can be slow and irregular to germinate, so allow several weeks for seedlings to emerge.

Transplant once seedlings are well established into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Provide a strong trellis, fence or pergola for the vigorous vines to climb. Keep well watered during establishment and flowering and fruit development, while avoiding waterlogged soil.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
