Cajanus cajan

An incredibly versatile and productive legume shrub growing to approximately 2 metres in height. Widely cultivated throughout the tropics and subtropics, Pigeon Pea is the traditional source of dhal in India, where the protein-rich seeds are an important staple food. The seeds can be eaten fresh as green peas, dried for cooking, or ground into flour.

Fast growing and hardy, Pigeon Pea is valued not only as a food crop but also as stock feed, poultry fodder, green manure, and a shelter plant. Its deep root system helps improve soil structure while its nitrogen-fixing ability contributes fertility to surrounding crops. The attractive yellow and red pea flowers attract bees and beneficial insects, while the dense growth habit makes it useful for temporary windbreaks and regenerative planting systems.

Approximately 25 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: September to March
Subtropics: September to February
Mild climates: Spring to early summer
Cold climates: Late spring after frost has passed

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed directly into well-drained soil after all danger of frost has passed. Plant 2–3cm deep in a full sun position and keep moist during establishment. Pigeon Pea is adaptable to a wide range of soil types and becomes highly drought tolerant once established. Space plants approximately 1–2 metres apart depending on intended use. Harvest pods green for fresh peas or allow them to mature and dry on the plant for storage and processing. Approximately 120–180 days to harvest.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
