Melaleuca alternifolia

A valuable Australian native renowned as the source of tea tree essential oil. Naturally occurring in coastal wetland areas of New South Wales and Queensland, this attractive evergreen shrub or small tree has long been valued for the aromatic oil contained within its leaves. Tea tree oil is widely used in shampoos, creams, soaps, cosmetics and skincare products and has a long history of traditional use. The plant produces masses of creamy white bottlebrush-like flowers that attract bees and other beneficial insects.

Tea Tree thrives in moist conditions and is particularly well suited to dam margins, rain gardens, wetter areas of the landscape and sites similar to those favoured by Weeping Bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis). Fast growing and adaptable, it can also be pruned to maintain a compact form.

Approximately 600 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: Year round
Subtropics: Year round
Mild climates: Spring and autumn
Cold climates: Spring after frost has passed

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed onto the surface of a fine, moist seed raising mix and gently press into place. Do not cover seed, as light is required for germination. Keep consistently moist and maintain good humidity without waterlogging. Position in a bright location with indirect light. Germination typically occurs within 15–30 days under favourable conditions. Transplant seedlings carefully once large enough to handle. Plant in full sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soil.
