Melia azedarach

An attractive ornamental shade tree native to Australia and parts of Asia, commonly found along rainforest margins and in open woodland settings. Growing to approximately 7–10 metres tall, White Cedar is valued for its graceful form, fern-like foliage and masses of fragrant lilac-purple flowers that appear in spring and early summer. These are followed by clusters of decorative golden-yellow berries that persist on the tree well into winter after the leaves have fallen.

A close relative of the Neem tree, White Cedar has traditionally been valued for its durable timber and natural insect-repelling properties. The leaves have been used as a botanical insecticide, while the hard berries have been used for beads and craftwork. The tree provides excellent shade and habitat for birds, which readily consume the fruit. All parts of the plant are poisonous to mammals if ingested and should be kept away from livestock, pets and children.

Approximately 12 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: Spring to autumn
Subtropics: Spring and summer
Mild climates: Spring and early summer
Cold climates: Spring after frost has passed

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed into a quality seed raising mix and lightly cover. Keep warm and consistently moist during germination. Position in a bright location with filtered light until seedlings are established. Transplant into a sunny to partly shaded position with well-drained soil. Young trees benefit from regular watering during establishment but become increasingly drought tolerant with age. Suitable as a shade tree, shelter tree or ornamental feature planting.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
