Vicia villosa

Namoi Woolly Pod Vetch is a vigorous cool-season annual legume valued for high-protein forage, green manure, cover cropping and soil improvement. It produces strong winter and spring growth, providing useful spring feed while building substantial organic matter.

As a legume, Namoi forms a symbiotic relationship with beneficial soil bacteria, fixing atmospheric nitrogen through its root nodules and helping improve soil fertility for following crops. Its vigorous, spreading growth provides excellent ground coverage, helping protect bare soil and suppress weeds.

When allowed to flower and set sufficient seed in spring, Namoi can regenerate naturally in following seasons, making it particularly useful in pasture and longer-term soil-building systems.

Sowing rate: approximately 5–10 kg/ha

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to winter
Mild climates: Autumn to spring
Cold climates: Autumn or spring

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly into prepared soil from autumn through spring, approximately 2–4 cm deep. Keep moist during germination and establishment.

For green manure, cut at or around flowering and leave the growth on the surface as mulch or incorporate lightly into the soil. If growing for natural regeneration, allow sufficient plants to flower and set mature seed before cutting or grazing.

For maximum nitrogen fixation, treat seed with the appropriate Vetch inoculant where compatible rhizobia are not already established in the soil.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
